In 2015, when the Young Women’s Leadership Academy accepted the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon award for academic achievement, it was the only school in San Antonio to receive the coveted recognition.

The fact that the school had opened its doors only seven years earlier added to the surprise of the announcement.

Facts Related to Blue Ribbon Success:

  • Only the Texas Education Agency can nominate a Texas public, private or charter school for the honor.
  • Blue Ribbon status recognizes high academic achievement, the caliber of the program and the quality of instruction and teachers, as well as student commitment. It’s a message colleges like to hear.
  • Teacher training for critical teaching methods and peer review are key priorities.

  • YWLA also continues to add new classes and electives, such as robotics last year, at the request of students. The approach ensures YWLA girls have the intellectual curiosity, confidence and academic credentials to take their place among their peers as 21st Century thinkers and problem-solvers.
  • Over its short life, YWLA has seen 100 percent of its students not only graduate, but accepted into a wide range of colleges across the United States, including an increasing number of the nation’s top universities.
